2013 Review & 2014 Preview

   

Happy New Year lovelies!

We are so grateful for all the support you have given us this past year & we pray you have a blessed 2014! But before we delve into each of our own thoughts, we wanted to show how far we've come in this past year as a magazine. We are officially one year old as of yesterday and have put out four magazines in that year! How crazy is that?!

We've learned a lot of lessons through putting these four labors of love out...some hard, some fun...but all in all it's fulfilling to see our year of work right up there. We've revamped our logo, changed the Table of Contents page a gazillion times, and stayed up many late nights working on design & editing. Yet, we've done some fun stuff including our first official team photo shoot, flying to see each other a fair amount (though not as much as we'd like!), and building relationships with our interviewees, models, and contributors. But we wouldn't have been able to do all this without YOU reading our magazine...so thank you from the bottom of our hearts for doing so!

Now onto each of our own thoughts on 2013 + 2014!


SARAH

Editor-in-Chief's note: I'm so proud of this girl & who she's become in the past year. A world-traveling photographer, relationship-builder, and intentional writer. She's blasted out a bunch of emails securing contributors for our issues and wrote many beautiful words for our blog. So thankful for her!

Favorite article/spread: Amanda Marie Lackey's Interview, love her work, words, and heart! Certainly was a joy having her featured!
Favorite moment of 2013 related to S&S: Our trip to Minneapolis! Having the whole team all together was incredible & oh so fun. Such sweet moments walking downtown, being shot by Gina, having articles flying everywhere & no sleep for the win! Love these girls to the core.
How did 2013 change & teach you? 2013 was a huge year of witnessing God's faithfulness through change. Lots of letting go & trusting, along with a handful of preparation for an upcoming crossroad in 2014. 2013 has taught me to not even begin to try to plan up a future of my own because my thoughts are not His thoughts & His ways are completely worth seeking out, because when we surrender it all He reveals great & unsearchable things.
Favorite book: Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud, Dr. John Townsend. A marvelous book to end the year & begin the next with.
Favorite obsession in 2013: Smart Barre! It is a combination of ballet, yoga, & pilates incorporated into an hour of kick booty class with women of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Not only has the exercise been refreshing, but meeting new people throughout my community has been way super fun. I won't lie though, there is a super amazing coffee shop right next door that keeps me motivated thorough out class… guilty as charged!


Some goals for 2014 : Trusting, trusting, trusting my Savior. It's a simple goal, but still holds a lot of weight for 2014 & this next season of life for me personally.
Word for 2014: Fearless.
What are you ready for in 2014? Face plants! No but really, my family and I brought in the New Year in CB, Colorado & during our time here I attempted to take up snowboarding. This consisted of "snow face, face snow" we got real acquainted with each other…it was sweet preparation in the weirdest of ways, 2014 has already presented its fair share of crossroads & I would be lying if I said I didn't feel uneasy about it all. We learn by face planting, we learn my tumbling down hills, sometimes we have to break bones, other times the Lord is gracious enough to let it just be a pulled muscle. Regardless, failure & success shape, significance drives. Lots of change & lots of uncertainty, but my soul is at rest in the arms of my Savior.
What are you excited most about Issue 4? I think I most excited to see this year round out as a whole with each seasonal issue complete. This has been such a fun adventure & I am so grateful to have been apart of it all.


CIERA

Editor-in-Chief's note: This bam-stinkin' girl has grown SO much in this past year. Nikon to Canon. Portraits to weddings. Starbucks to Caribou (just kidding!! Sorta. She did love Caribou when she was in MN). I know that this next year will only be one of more growth for her! Grateful to have her :)

Favorite moment of 2013 related to S&S: Our shoot with Gina Zeidler! So much fun! 
How did 2013 change & teach you? I learned so much from photography to relationships to life. I feel like a completely different person than I was one year ago in a good way. Growing into adulthood has proven to be a time of learning lots of life lessons, sometimes the easy way sometimes the hard way. I'm so grateful for this time because I know it will mold and shape me into the person that I am. 
Favorite obsession in 2013: Listening to the All Sons and Daughters album everyday on the way to work


Some goals for 2014: Creating a better brand, writing more, building intentional relationships, quiet time.
Word for 2014: Intentionality. 
What are you ready for in 2014? Bethany's visit (eeeep!), turning 21, and shooting more weddings. 
What are you excited most about Issue 4? Completing our first four seasonal issues; spring, summer, fall, and winter! Such an accomplishment!


MACKENZIE

Editor-in-Chief's note: She's trusted God through moving to frigid Minnesota & spurs us all on to more Jesus, better style, and clearer words. I'm so excited for where this next year will take her & the character it will etch into her soul... a place where her trust will be without borders. Beyond thankful for her!!

Favorite moment of 2013 related to S&S: Loved, loved our team, shoot in July with Gina Zeidler
How did 2013 change & teach you? Between a move half way across the country and flying everywhere imaginable, I can undoubtedly say this year has been filled with adventure. Serving stellar couples, traveling the world, sharing my story at the Making Things Happen conference, and cultivating deep relationships….. 2013 has left it's mark on me and it is a year for the books. My move to Minneapolis was absolutely the hardest change in 2013 but has offered so much growth and independence, and the chance to discover a new city. 
Favorite book: Currently reading and loving The Power of Starting Something Stupid by Richie (and Natalie) Norton
Favorite obsession in 2013: I'm currently loving and diving into product photography.

Some goals for 2014: More time in scripture, less on social media. Consistent blogging. 
Word for 2014: Assurance and Rest. 
What are you ready for in 2014? I'm ready for more big changes, travel & growth. 
What are you excited most about issue 4? I am so, so excited by the core of this next issue!


BETHANY

Favorite article/spread: Regretless by Mackenzie Kern in Issue 3
Favorite moment of 2013 related to S&S: The Minneapolis trip, by far. Staying up late talking, dreaming & planning in Kenzie's apartment is one of the highlights of that week.
How did 2013 change & teach you? 2013 was a bit of a hard year, but filled with God's goodness throughout. It taught me that even in the foggy, doubt-filled place that God is there & He is working in us even when we don't think He is. It was a season of being still, staying home (quite literally), and of my heart being broken for God to rebuild it.
Favorite book: The Icarus Deception by Seth Godin. This book stunned my socks off and it shaped the way I want to do business & life.
Favorite obsession in 2013: Having smoothies every morning!


Some goals for 2014: Write more, which might become a 500 words a day goal. I feel like writing will be the biggest area of emphasis in 2014 for me...not sure exactly why yet! Vlog every week. Launch a new website/brand. Exploring editorial & fashion photography. Finally get a mkiii :)
Word for 2014: Liberation.
What are you ready for in 2014? Change, action, travels, and living in God's freedom.
What are you excited most about Issue 4? The heart of it...when we decided on what it would be about I was fine with it, of course, but just in the past couple of days God has shown me how ____ was & wasn't in my life. And I'm so excited to write about it :)



All in all...it's crazy to see how far we've come in a year in these two pictures alone! And we're excited to see where God takes us, grows us, and leads us in 2014. Thank you again for being apart of Shine & Soar Magazine in 2013, we can't wait to continue to build some loveliness in 2014!

Issue 2 // Meet the Models

I just want to hug each of these girls and bottle up their souls forever. Yep, they're seriously that amazing. Hearts afire for Christ, chasing the dreams on their hearts, and doing life with their own flair. They had no camera shyness in them, even when all of our team members had a camera pointed at them (4 cameras people!). So meet the fabulousness of Ashley, Alex, and Jaana....

Hello! I’m Ashley, a 20 year old Minnesota girl pursuing a degree in elementary education. I am looking forward to being an RA this coming fall at college and having the opportunity to invest in the lives of the girls on my floor. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano and violin, going shopping, having coffee dates with friends, biking and rollerblading, reading a non-school-related book, and participating in anything that has to do with water (the ocean is my favorite!). But beyond all these things, my personal relationship with Jesus Christ is what I’m most passionate about. Each day is a brand new opportunity to walk with Him, every struggle is an opportunity to grow closer to Jesus and become more like Christ, and every triumph is an opportunity to love Him more. I’ve found that life in the will of God only gets better in each phase that we enter, and there is no greater joy than living wholly for Jesus Christ!

Hey there, My name is Jaana Singh. I'm 18 years old and am from Corcoran, MN. A few things about me; I strive to show the essence of God as I grow in my relationship with Him every day. Because of His love, I've grown very passionate about quite a few things in life such as dance. Recently the Lord has directed and led me to start my own business in Wayzata called "The Awakening." There I enjoy spending my days teaching dance and gymnastics to many highly competitive athletes. I have a wonderful family and great friends who support me in all I do and feel very blessed to have them by my side.

July 2013 // Behind the Scenes

Many exciting adventures are in the works behind the scenes with the Shine & Soar team this week! Here is a little update with what we are up to!

The cover shoot for the Summer Issue is underway and we have decided to fly Sarah up this Saturday & Ciera up this Sunday to Minneapolis! Ciera will be brainstorming to no end and helping Bethany with layout and design, while Sarah will put her video skills to the test once again during the cover shoot, which will be shot by Bethany and assisted by Mackenzie! Needless to say, we are all beyond excited to all be together as a team, in person, face to face, really, we can't wait!

Our next exciting announcement is that we will be starting a biweekly vlog! Ah!! Our team video introduction will be shot while we are all together, giving you the in's and out's of what that means for the future. Not only will we be shooting video together, but we may have some kind of a photo shoot in store, with some one awesome. But, you will just have to wait to hear and see more of that!

We are wrapping things up with our outstanding contributors and are beyond excited to be launching Issue 2 in the near future! We are ready to pray & dream as a team & are oh so grateful for your prayers as well!

From Bethany: Oh man. Kenz, you are amazeballs. Ever since I met you for the first time over lunch in the ATL airport in August, you've blessed me by your wisdom, love, and pure craziness. Haha. And it's a privilege to do life, magazine making, and 3am work dates with you. I can't wait to make more memories with you here in Minneapolis and beyond! Keep chasing God + His beautiful calling on your life! Happy birthday you fabulous chica!

Say Hello // Our Spring Issue Models

Hello beautiful lovely people! I am so stinking excited to introduce you to some of the AMAZING models we had the privilege of working with for this past Spring Issue! Everyone was absolutely stunning & brought their own unique personality to the shoot! Each girl exuded such confidence that can only be found in the Lord & ultimately just inspired us like nobodies business!

Each season we go on the hunt for models, but not just any models. We are looking for girls who are living Authentic, God fearing lives & loving every minute of it! We want girls who are dreaming big & doing big things for the kingdom of God! So without further or do, say hello to our stunning Spring models!

 

Hey, my name is Rebekah Hallum. I am 15 years old and I love to laugh and make others smile. The joy I have in Christ I so want to share with everyone I encounter. Recently Cook Childrens has accepted me to come and volunteer over the summer. My position includes spending time with the children and making them smile even if their situation is rough. God is teaching me to genuinely love others, humble myself not only before Him but also before others and to stop relying on me and my "power" but to fully rely on God's incredible, mighty strength.


My name is Hannah Hallum and I am 17 years old. My whole life I have lived in Texas along with my loving, godly parents and 3 younger sisters. For about 12 years, my gift and passion has been dance. But I don't dance just because it's fun; I dance to bring glory to my King and my Savior. My dream would be to continue with my dance in college along with majoring in nursing. Someday, if God wills it, I want to go into the mission field and become a medical missionary. But whatever happens, my biggest desire is to die to myself daily in order to make His name famous!


Hey there, my name is Lydia Simmons! I am 13 years old, I love dancing, fashion, sparkly things, laughter and Jesus. I am homeschooled and I take ballet at the Gayle Corkery School of Ballet. I would love to one day dance at the School of American Ballet in New York! My favorite color is purple and I love diamonds!



Hi, I'm Bree! I absolutely love horses, caramel Frappuccinos, and lots of laughter. I have a passion for life; capturing it through a lens and living it to it's fullest. I also love seeing newly born life, which is why I'm on my way down the road in becoming a midwife! I'm so excited to be doing what God has called me to be.




My name is Shelby Hewitt & I'm a beekeeper. I know interesting hobby, huh? I first became interested in beekeeping when I realized the amount of money I was spending on honey. Now long story short I am the proud owner of three very active beehives. I love climbing into my over sized bee suit to tend to my bees. The way they buzz around my head protecting their honey is truly mesmerizing. Needless to say, I'm smitten with my bees. They go from flower to flower collecting nectar to then return to their hive to make honey. It's in those moments that I don't understand how people don't believe their is a God. He created the such amazing creatures, so small yet, so complex. I'm reminded in times of sadness & loss that God designed the bees for His glory & I should never doubt His plan for me.



Howdy! My name is Suzanne Myers, but all of my friends just call me Suzy. I’m 17 years old (18 in May!!), and a senior in High School. This is my 10th, and final, year to be homeschooled; in the Fall I hope to go to College (where I’m not sure yet, but I know Christ will guide me to where I’m suppose to go.). I love playing the piano (right now I’m working on I See the Light, a piece from Tangled, the movie and am really loving it!!), scrapbooking, baking, and just having fun with my friends. I also love traveling, one of my goals is to visit all 50 states, and I’m over halfway there.



My name is Natalie Williams! Though most people call me Natty. I'm a huge dork that plays video games! I love spending time with my friends, singing and dancing! I love singing worship songs! And talking about God with my family! God is my number one man and I love learning more things about his word!

Where We've Been

 Oh my. It's been too long y'all. Life has been hectic for the past two months for all of us. School. Midterms. Traveling. Weddings. Photoshoots. And other awesome life happenings. We're busy in the throws of assembling the spring issue & it will be out in early April! Hooray!! Here's what we've been up to + what God has been teaching us this winter::

Bethany:

 Life is crazy. Crazy good and crazy hard.

Over the past 3 months I've been in a season of pruning and loneliness. And I've come to be okay with it...because it is a season. Not my life. Not my destiny. 

In December I moved for the first time in my life and gave up one of the only things in my life I'd kill to keep: my dog. She was a lot more than a dog, but my baby (yes, call me a sap but whatever!).  When I came face to face with the reality of having to move & give her up, I was in Fort Worth with these three lovely besties...best timing ever. Through praying about it and their wisdom, I had peace that this is what I had to do, and that God had a beautiful purpose through it. 

Oh, did He ever. 

It woke me up. From putting my identity in things other than Christ. From clinging onto things so hard. From not putting Christ first.

Losing my dog was the best thing to happen to my spiritual life.

Truth.

As I drove away from giving her away, Desert Song played on the radio. 

"All of my life
In every season
You are still God
I have a reason to sing
I have a reason to worship"

Oh God's timing :)

My life hasn't been all peaches & cream since moving. God's been teaching me lessons on contentment, identity, and relationships, and sometimes I just want to curl up in a ball, cry, then magically transform into a girl that has it all together. Hah! I have so much to learn.

Not only did I move for the first time in my life, but I moved 25 miles out of Minneapolis into a city I would've kicked & screamed about living in 6 months ago. It's been different living in a lakeside city, not an inner suburb (mainly not seeing a lot of friends anymore), but the loneliness has been pointing me upwards. Towards Him.

One of my favorite quotes ever:

Loneliness is not an indication of abandonment, but an invitation to intimacy with the One who will never abandon you. - Steven Furtick

Can I get an amen?! 


I'm starting to feel okay about being where I am in life. Not only because after season of pruning comes flourishing, but God ordained me to be here for a gorgeous PURPOSE.

So for right now, I'm drinking in the solitude & working on assembling the next issue with the theme of new beginnings. And there is even new beginnings for the one still in the soul season of winter and loneliness. Always.


Sarah:

Hey everyone,


These past two months have been so incredible! When Bethany first began to talk about this upcoming topic of “New Beginnings” for the spring magazine issue, I was a bit nervous. Okay, I won’t lie I was really nervous.

I guess I was just afraid I wasn’t qualified enough to write on such a strong topic. WELL, little did I know all the things the Lord was going to be teaching me these past 2 months! WOW!

I mean like, holy guacamole WOW! All the way from travel to business to life, Jesus has just truly been chiseling away at my heart.

Lately the Lord has been reminding me of my past, now keep in mind its not a super yucky rebellious past, but I’m not particularly proud of it. It started at the beginning of my annual compulsive spring cleaning or LIFE DETOX as I like to call it.

After spending these past few months traveling, stressing over school & business along with not eating particularly grande, I just need to refocus on well, me. Not in a selfish way, but in a way that I needed to make sure my heart was in the right place.

But, back to life detoxing, as I rummaged through the depths of my closet I came across an old year book from my freshmen year (keep in mind this is from a large homeschool coop.) Lets just say, I wish I never had to see that again,

I think its all to easy for us to forget our past, you see, I went through this phase where I truly has no idea who I was, I was just going through the motions of life & one of my biggest faults was comparison. I was ALWAYS comparing myself to other girls around me & after a while that took a toll on my heart. My skin was certainly not clear, my heart was short and flat to my face, I had a funky sense of style, but the worst part was...

I wasn’t happy.

I thought, only if I looked like her, then I would be happy. NEGATIVE!!!!!

Girls, please please please listen to me. Until your every being lies in the Lord will you find true joy & beauty that radiates from the inside out. Start trusting Him & let him be your source of life, I promise, once you allow yourself to be transformed there is NO turning back.

I won’t lie, after looking at that year book picture & even remembering the car ride to have it taken makes me sick. I was teary eyed that morning because I felt so insecure with who I was.

For a while I thought I could dismiss this period of time in my life, but the Lord reminded me that we all change, why?

Because Jesus makes all things new.

I can now boast in the Lord for what He has done in my life & that my friends is an amazing reality.

Change is messy & far from beautiful, but until our eyes our opened to the fact that Jesus is made perfect through our imperfections can we truly live.

For it is no long I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

Needless to say I am truly excited to be sharing more about this season that the Lord really has all the Shine Team in (which is kinda wild).

Jesus is pruning & Spring is coming, come jump on this band wagon, cause we are stoked!


Ciera:

I’m at a place in my life where the friends that I grew up with are getting engaged, married, & having children of their own, while I haven’t even been on a date. Surprisingly, I’m ok with that… for now at least.

Of course, being in this stage of life is a little weird. These past two months I’ve learned a lot about myself: what I like and don’t like, what my passions are, and what makes me light up. I’m learning how to be an adult and what the world expects of me. I’ve learned to be wise when following my dreams. I’ve gone places and seen things and done stuff I never thought would be possible. I’ve dreamed big and worked hard. I’ve practiced and learned. I’ve made mistakes and pushed forward…

It’s hard some days. Those days when I start looking around at others and compare myself to them, I get discouraged at how far I have to go. But then I have to take a step back and reassess everything. The only person I can compare myself to is the person I was… so I do that and realize just how far I’ve come and all the obstacles I had to jump over to get here, where I am now.

In this issue we talk all about finding joy in the change and being content with where you are right now while still pursuing your ultimate goals. If you only take one thing away from this issue, I hope that it would be that life is all about perspective.

You can choose to focus on the negative things or you can choose to focus on the positive things. You can choose to bring glory to Christ through all of your circumstances or you can choose to be bitter about everything.

It’s up to you, how you perceive the world, and what you make of it.

These past few months have been a rollercoaster of new beginnings. It has definitely set the tone for the spring issue… from starting a new job, to traveling, to second shooting my very first wedding with Sarah, all of these combine to create the whirlwind that is my life right now, but I’m excited and ready to take on what comes next.


Mackenzie:

These past two months have flown by faster than I ever imagined they would or could! I've been balancing life, business, and school.... This year has been the most interesting combination of crazy and stressful, yet so blessed. I have traveled every other weekend, shot several gorgeous sessions in Nashville, Savannah, and Charleston... Visited with Sarah and Ciera, helped at the fantastic Making Things Happen Intensive, and lately I am burying myself in school work!

Life can be so wonderful, beautiful, and overwhelming at the same time. In every single circumstance, never forget to place your hopes and fears at the feet of Jesus. As I'm finding the balance in it all, I've been discovering so much peace in Phillipians 4:6-8:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

I'm praying and hoping that you all find rest and courage in Jesus as we head into spring! I hope you all have a beautiful weekend!
